Mine operations is the third phase of the mining cycle, when ore is being extracted and is being processed into product. There are two types of mines: underground and open pit; and four main work areas: excavation areas, processing plant, waste storage, and supporting  services.  A mine can operate for several years, or can be in the operations phase for several decades.
